I hope wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you right where you are.
I am excited to share that my second book, Daily Devotional: 12 Steps to Unshakable Recovery, is now published. I would be grateful for your support in purchasing a copy. Your support helps me continue serving those who live with mental health and substance misuse challenges. This devotional is also meant to offer you hope and encouragement as you walk the path toward healing, renewal, and abundant health.
Each month, I meet with a spiritual director. He is a priest who lives a quiet, contemplative life in a community near my home. Contemplative spirituality is the practice of setting aside regular time to be with God through prayer, reflection on Scripture, and worship.
I seek his guidance as I learn to hear God’s voice in my Recovery. I also ask for insight on how to express my relationship with God as an author.
While writing my second book, Daily Devotional: 12 Steps to Unshakeable Recovery, my editor suggested that I choose one term—either “God” or “Higher Power”—when writing about the Twelve Steps and mental wellness. Through prayer and quiet reflection, I chose to use the word God.
I came to this choice for two reasons.
First, faith in God has helped me release years of anger and bitterness toward those who hurt me. Before I let go, I felt stuck, like I was trapped in deep mud. Recovery felt out of reach. My relationship with God through Jesus is teaching me how to face life’s pain, loss, and sorrow with hope.
Second, I meet many people in Recovery who feel angry and bitter because of how others have treated them. Often, these feelings make sense. Still, letting go is very hard, especially when faith in God is weak or not present.
Some of us were hurt in the name of religion. I have struggled with this too. We may ask, “How could God allow this?” Sometimes the harm came from a priest, a minister, or someone we trusted.
God does not cause this darkness. He gives each of us free will. God is the author of Recovery. When we choose to believe this, our hearts can find the strength to release anger, bitterness, and the shadows within us.
I share these thoughts not to convert anyone, but to witness a miracle. God loves us. God wants a relationship with us. God longs to bring healing and peace to our minds and hearts.
This Daily Devotional invites us to be aware, to understand why we act as we do, and to take action—not just to grow stronger in Recovery, but to grow deeper in love with God and with the people who matter most in our lives.
Writing this makes me feel vulnerable. My blogs are always written from the heart and out of love for your healing, your spirituality, and your Recovery.
Remember, Recovery is here right now, in this very moment.
