February 5, 2026 “Listening to the Quiet Thirst of the Heart!”

I hope wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you right where you are.

As a deer thirsts and seeks water, it responds to a real need. Have you ever felt a deep longing in your soul? I know I have.

At times, I feel unsettled. Nothing seems clearly wrong, yet something feels off. I tell myself I should be at peace. Still, the more I try to explain my restlessness, the harder it is to name. I wonder: Am I tired? Distracted? Ungrateful?

I try to explain it away. I judge myself. I pray harder and try to trust more deeply. I think that if I do enough, the feeling will go away.

Bruce Downes, the Catholic Guy, says, “Not every interior issue is meant to be solved. Not all restlessness needs to be fixed. The heart registers a need before the mind finds the words for it.”
Restlessness is deeply spiritual. It is not a thirst for control or quick relief. It is not something missing in us. It is a gentle stirring, calling us deeper into Recovery.

When the heart is open, there are seasons when longing hurts before comfort comes. This is not a race to get through pain. It is not a reason for shame. In these moments, we are invited to practice self-care and to let emotions be present without letting them lead.

We can feel our emotions without letting them define us. Bruce Downes also says, “The search within us is God. It is not that we lack, but that our heart is seeking after God.” I also hear this as our heart seeking Recovery.

Lately, I have felt this restlessness again. So I chose to speak with a priest, who then connected me with a spiritual director. I sense that this is where I will learn what is tugging at my heart. In the past, I may have filled this longing with things, stayed busy to escape it, or ignored it altogether.

How do you respond to restlessness when it shows up in your life? I would truly love to hear your thoughts.

Remember, Recovery is here right now, in this very moment.
