January 16, 2026 “Growing Stronger Than Fear!”

I hope wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you right where you are.

Dom Raso is a former Navy SEAL. I recently heard an interview where he talked about overcoming fear. He said, “Like any emotion, if it is not guided by virtue, it becomes harmful. The virtue that guides fear is courage.”

Virtue is like a muscle. With God’s grace, we can strengthen it. When we grow in courage, we weaken fear. But how do we build that muscle?

We all have a relationship with fear. When we listen to unhealthy fear, it holds us back and keeps us from becoming the best version of ourselves. Here are five loving and practical ways to break free from fear:

1. Repeat a mantra.
What will you tell yourself when fear shows up? I ask, “Is this fear false evidence appearing real?” If so, I choose courage and surrender to God.

2. Train your triggers.
When a fearful thought comes, be curious. Ask where it started. Many fears begin in childhood.

3. Let love overcome fear.
G.K. Chesterton said, “The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.”

4. Replace fear with a better fear.
Do not fear what can harm the body. Instead, fear losing your soul. Let your love for God guide you.

5. Engage your body.
Practice breathing and mindfulness. I try to spend 15 to 20 minutes in mindfulness at least five times a week.

We are spiritual warriors first. Without spiritual strength, no other preparation is complete. Fear is simply the space between what we know and what we do not know. With God, we can walk forward in peace.

Remember, Recovery is here right now, in this very moment.
