January 19, 2026 “Learning to Listen with the Heart!”

I hope wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you right where you are.

I want to grow closer to God. One way I can do this is by nurturing a discerning heart. This means learning to understand the ups and downs of my spiritual life. Our spiritual experiences happen inside us—in our minds, hearts, and souls. But how do we know if a thought or feeling is from God or not?

When our heart feels a certain way, we often think a certain way. When my heart feels heavy, I may lose hope. When my heart is soft toward others, I show kindness, compassion, and care. When my heart is hard, I become impatient, judgmental, and easily upset.

Our minds and hearts work together as we bring Recovery into our healing. To begin discerning, we ask: “Is this from God, or not?” This is an important step in learning how to live a spiritual life.

When we learn to notice the heaviness in our lives, we can begin to move toward freedom. We can grow out of the darkness. Eleven years ago, I went through one of the darkest times in my life. In my bedroom, there was a crucifix on the wall. Each day, I would look at it and pray. Over time, it brought me a sense of peace.

The spiritual life is about growing in love—especially love for ourselves. As we slowly learn to discern, we are gently transformed.

Remember, Recovery is here right now, in this very moment.
