October 9, 2024 The Inheritance!

Have you ever thought less of yourself? I know I have fed the wolf way too many times. Recovery teaches us not to think less of ourselves than the strength of the 12-Steps. Do not fear what Recovery can do through us when we strive to heal our lives.

We are given talents. Sometimes we focus on differences. For example, why does one grandson inherit from their grandfather a million dollars, another one hundred thousand, and a third one ten thousand? Recovery is the grandfather and we are the grandson’s. Grandpa is less concerned about the amount of (cash) talents each grandson has instead he wants them to experience joy when they use their gifts.

Recovery is the same way as giving us strengths, talents, and abilities. Recovery knows we can all do great things. In the story, the first and second grandson doubled their (cash) talents and shared the joy with their grandfather. However, the third grandson tells his grandfather he buried his (cash) talents, instead of being driven by hope and joy he was driven by fear. He believes no matter what he does he will never measure up. His fear paralyzes him so he does nothing with his (cash) talents.

This is not a natural fear that protects us in difficulty or distress. His belief is rooted in a false belief that he is not worthy of his grandfather’s hope and joy. At different times in our lives, we may see ourselves in the first two grandsons or the fearful one. Recovery’s lesson here is clear, do not succumb to a fear that makes us feel we are less to Recovery. We are called to be courageous and confirm our values even when we think we don’t matter.

Recovery reminds us to trust our wisdom in moments when we are vulnerable, full of joy, hope, and awareness of our talents-gifts, or even when we are fearful or think less of ourselves. Perhaps we can give thanks to people in our lives who inspire us with their spiritual tenacity and care for us. Perhaps, we have done this to someone else as well.
