I am reading a book titled, “Imperfect” by Brene’ Brown. While reading this book, I think of her journey to help us realize the gifts of imperfection. This book has sold over 3 million copies and it covers the gest of what Recovery life is all about. Her work has brought more people to know healing and is a guidepost to wholeness.
Brene’ understands what it takes to embrace wholehearted living through our minds, hearts, and souls. The gifts of imperfection are courage, compassion, and connection. This is something unique, particularly in the Recovery community. She encourages us to explore the power of love, belonging, and being enough. Finding a source of unity in our hearts is challenging due to the division in our culture (stigma). If we are Catholic, Jewish, Greek, black, white, Asian, or Hispanic, anyone can find a home in a Recovery program.
Foolishness can get in the way of our Recovery. John was seeking relief from a lifelong battle with depression and anxiety. His therapist recommended he attend a support group. He claimed to be too busy and could not fit it into his daily routine. He ran into an old friend at the grocery store. The friend suffered from a mental health condition and recommended he attend a support group with him on Tuesday evenings. He went to church on Sunday and noticed a flyer on the table as he entered the church inviting people to attend a support group.
John returned to see his therapist. The therapist said, “Did you attend a support group meeting”?
John said, “No, I turned down three different opportunities to attend because I am not sure they would help me Recover. I am waiting for the right resource to help me”.
The therapist said, “There were three different people placed in your life encouraging you to attend a support group. I think we are the resource you are looking for”.
John could not see what Recovery was calling him to do. We are on this walk to find wisdom through Recovery. The best way to receive wisdom is by meditating on the 12-steps. Let’s encourage each other every day whether 5, 15, 30, or 1 hour to apply ourselves to Recovery. It is the pathway to receive wisdom under the mantel of healing.
