October 7, 2024 Bill Wilson & Dr. Robert Smith

Bill Wilson (Bill W) and Dr. Robert Smith (Dr. Bob) are credited with creating the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Colleen Spaeth and I did an adaptation of the 12 Steps allowing us to align with Recovery. Both these men had a great calling. They prepared our hearts and minds to receive the gift of spiritual freedom.

Bill and Dr. Bob called us to access our inner world and experience how important faith is in our practice. These men wanted to show us the path to empowerment and healing. Today the 12 Step movement has spread throughout the entire world. Some modifications have been made to meet the needs of individuals and groups. However, the foundation and purpose are universal.

We learn from Recovery that adhering to the steps requires intentional effort for us. I have experienced and witnessed envy, lies, guilt, and shame consume us. With that said, we can allow our hearts to heal and wash away counterproductive feelings.

Jane entered a 12-step program after years of addiction, sadness, and anxiety. Her parents are both alcoholics and her brother suffers from an untreated mental health condition. She jumped in with both feet to overcome the darkness within her. Jane became healthier as a result of working the 12-steps. She began to notice how broken her parents and brother were. Her family attempted to bring her back into their lifestyle. Her father said, “Are we too good for you now”?

If we strive to follow a 12-step program and its way of love we can expect critics of every kind. Despite obstacles, our healing can bring the reward of peace and joy. We cannot do this on our own. We need the support from people on the same journey as us. Bill and Dr. Bob realized this many years ago (1938). The following link directs us to a Peer Recovery Support Group on Thursday evenings from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. https://superhumanbeing.net/thursday-zoom-event/ this is an invitation to join us.

Those of us committing to a life of Recovery are SuperHuman Beings. There is suffering in Recovery but we can find truth and life. May we find in Recovery the strength and wisdom to witness to healing so others come to know the love and mercy of Recovery. We have been blessed to live in the power of the 12-steps as the authors, Bob and Dr. Bob, intended for us.
