James and John were compassionately known as sons of thunder maybe to highlight their impulsiveness. James suffered from a mental health condition and John struggled with addiction. They were denied hospitality by some family members. They wished that fire from heaven came down on select family members because of their lack of compassion and kindness.
On another occasion, they asked their friend Spirit the two best places in the world to experience healing. They are in the early stage of Recovery. Spirit tells them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cool aid I have to offer”? Here Spirit is referring to his thirty years working on his Recovery. James and John do not understand his real meaning. They replied, “We are able”.
When the time comes Spirit will seek to invite them to share in Recovery but they are nowhere to be found. All this changed when Spirit stood strong in the wilderness and refused to act on his impulses of shame and guilt. Later Spirit visited James and John after they left a support group meeting. Spirit was preparing to leave the area to share the beauty and joy of Recovery with others willing to listen.
Spirit gave James and John his mission to finish his work. After they set aside their fears and boldly claimed the steps they were taking to heal it deepened their resolve. My brothers and sisters healing comes from those of us who dedicate ourselves to serving people in Recovery, spouses, family, and friends. Spirit was a living example of this. This aligns with step #12 “We gain insight into our Recovery through our Higher Power as we model these steps, and share our journey toward hope, healing, and health with people”.
