I am a Certified Peer Specialist who has the pleasure of connecting with family and friends who live with or associate with people who have a mental health condition or addiction. Family and friends attempt to support us with these conditions but at times experience frustration and believe we may be irredeemable.
There is hope! Resources are available to help us Recover. Family and friends need to be patient with us as we travel toward healing. Please do not lose hope as we face our thoughts and feelings, and for some the right medication due to our brain not functioning as designed.
Throughout my life, I experienced five dark moments when my mental and emotional pain was unbearable. Fortunately, I was able to have access to high-quality mental health services. This includes; therapy, psychiatry (medication management), and support groups. However, family and friends connections greatly assisted my healing.
One day I met with a Catholic Deacon from a church we were members. I was searching to find spiritual meaning in the emotional chaos I was experiencing. The Deacon said something profound to me, “Look at the cross with Jesus attached. During our lifetime none of us will ever experience the level of pain that Jesus suffered for us”.
His statement hit me like a ton of bricks. Almost a decade later this comment continues to be on my mind. When I have a down day I retrieve his statement from my memory, it helps me through challenging moments and brings balance back into my life.
The beauty of Recovery is people are willing to connect and engage with our healing process. Many religions and cultures highlight the importance of being in communion with humanity. This is not easy. But supporting us by listening and being present is a beautiful gift for us to receive.
I extend thanks to those who bring unity to my inner life. Friends and family help me find balance, especially in dark moments.
