Becky welcomed her cousin Mary into her home after she was discharged from the behavioral unit in Mary’s hometown. Becky believed Mary would continue her healing by being connected with her family. Mary realized Becky’s ‘yes’ was a special grace. Becky stated, “My soul proclaims the greatness of the healing you will experience with our family. Rejoice in healing with us from your mental health condition.”
Mary said, “Yes I am committed to feeling better.”
Over several months Mary spent time in contemplation, seeing her therapist, taking her medication, assisting Becky with household duties, and attending a support group. She changed her diet by eating wholesome foods rather than those filled with preservatives. Each morning she took a contemplative walk for about 30 to 40 minutes.
Mary spent time thinking about how she could open her heart to healing. She thought about the mission she was being called to. Thoughts came to her mind such as; being herself – this is powerful, to seek forgiveness for her shortcomings toward people, all learning is messy until she gets to an outcome, and growing is unsettling – feelings.
These thoughts prepared her for the next mission on this earth. Becky remained a constant support for Mary. Mary has hiccups along the way which she reminds herself does not mean a return to darkness but realizing learning is messy. During these difficult moments, Becky remained emotionally regulated, showed compassion, and was non-judgmental.
The people supporting Mary believe she will Recover and have an opportunity to return home. When we support someone with a mental health condition, addiction, or trauma we are helpful by simply showing up to walk beside them. In most cases, it does not mean we are offering additional material. Listening and making a heart-to-heart connection gives people in Recovery a booster shot.
