May 15, 2024 Heart to Heart

Paul has the reputation of being a person who wanders around the community he lives in. Every day he goes to the local Department of Human Services and sits in the waiting area. People make assumptions as to why he does this. Some believe he is homeless, others think he has a mental health condition, addiction, or suffering from trauma.

His presence in the waiting area went on for about 2 weeks. Finally, two social workers approached him to see what could be done for Paul to engage in community activities. Initially, he was reserved in talking to the workers. The workers found out the reason for his presence in the waiting area. He said, “I connect with your WiFi and search for employment opportunities”. It is difficult for him to find a job due to a history of felonies.

His mental health causes sadness and anxiety. He makes it clear his aversion to receiving help from the system. The worker began to build a rapport with him by connecting him with people able to help him find a job. The worker became an advocate listening to what he needed starting there with him. The mental health challenges will be addressed when he is ready.

Social workers and other helping professionals understand the importance of meeting people where they are at any given moment. I believe people who support those most vulnerable in our society can have their voices heard by those who need help. Workers in the field are spiritual warriors reminding those they serve are loved.

Paul and others similar to him need people to connect with to get their needs met. We can take the initiative to touch the hearts of these individuals. Often they are reluctant to accept help due to past experiences with the system.

When I work with people I fumble and stumble to support people like Paul. Essentially what I mean is I am “Imperfect”. What helps is connecting my heart to theirs. When this connection occurs there is nothing we cannot do together.

Since May is Mental Health Awareness Month I want to thank those who support me daily. Those in helping professions are truly a spiritual gift and blessing. Take good care of yourselves.

Peace

Larry
