I hope wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you right where you are.
Abba Poemen said that Abba Ammonas said: “A person can spend his whole time carrying an axe without succeeding in cutting down the tree; while another, with experience of tree-felling, brings the tree down with a few blows. He said that the axe is discernment.”
How do we overcome struggles with mental health and substance misuse? We begin by taking action early. When we notice symptoms at the start, we can stop them before they grow stronger—like stopping a small slide before it turns into a mudslide.
We can learn to see the warning signs before they take over. In Recovery, we begin to understand when our struggles are most likely to come. This helps us prepare ahead of time.
Our symptoms often show us where we feel weak. They point to the places in our mind, heart, and spirit that need care. These moments are not failures. They are gentle signs that we need support and healing.
So how do we respond? We stay aware. We build strength before the struggle begins. When we do this, we are more ready to face what comes.
I have learned to grow in self-awareness. This helps me notice symptoms early, before they take over my life. When I see the warning signs, I can act right away. I can calm the symptoms or stop them while they are still small.
Each day, I take simple steps. I take my medication. I go to support groups. I write. I make time for rest and recreation. I read spiritual books. I grow closer to Jesus through prayer and quiet time. I do these things no matter how I feel. This helps me stay steady and strong.
With gentle reflection and steady effort, we can care for the weak places in our lives. When we do, we are better prepared for hard days. We can meet our struggles with peace, faith, and hope.
Remember, Recovery is here right now, in this very moment.
