Parents of a son in his early 30s were in despair leading to disbelief seeing their son suffer for years from mental health and substance misuse conditions. They had lost all hope of any Recovery for their adult child. There are times in our lives when we know despair first hand, we observe suffering in those we love and care for. It may make us question healing and lead to a real loss of hope.
This story is for us, not only does Recovery restore the son but the faith and hope of his parents. Recovery causes the parents to exclaim, “We believe in Recovery – help our disbelief.” Watching a person suffer can be overwhelming, leading to despair and a real loss of hope we know this because of our suffering or being connected to a person that suffers.
With active participation in Recovery by the son hope is restored forever. What a meaningful story for any of us in Recovery or supporting a person in Recovery. Yes, healing again and again is more than physical restoration. They restore hope and an answer to the heartfelt and honest belief, “Help our disbelief”. This is the comfort in Recovery today.
The relief from despair, the answer to help our unbelief cannot be about the miraculous magic of winning a race we did not train for, winning a television set, or receiving a promotion we don’t deserve. It is not about these things. It is an encounter with Recovery that changes our hearts the active sincerity that leads to a new understanding of hope, healing, and health.
Those of us actively participating in Recovery know we can be healed by being in a relationship with other people and engaged in a Recovery Community. That’s good news for us, right?
This means not just the parent’s words claimed earlier, “Help our disbelief.” There is hope for us. Practicing principles of Recovery provides hope and healing I see a way when there does not seem to be one. Those of us in Recovery and our loved ones can be raised to a new level of healing, a new way of hope, and a life worth living for.
