March 10, 2025 “Who Are We!”

Saturday, I was invited to speak with a Recovery community about my healing journey. About 20 people were in attendance, eager to learn and witness my story. The Red House of Hope is a non-profit organization with the mission, “We bring back hope to those that have experienced loss and hardship due to struggles with mental health, addiction, and poverty.” https://www.redhouseofhope.com/ I encourage you to learn about their programming and attend events they sponsor.

Our journey of Recovery can be incredibly frightening. We arrive at a point in our healing and here’s what happens in our journey. We tell our closest friends, allies, and other people we deeply care about that we are going to die to an old self and become transformed into a new person. People who know us think we will come out differently but we must tell them the truth.

Confronting ourselves is similar to being present with a person who is suffering a horrid death and wants to reconcile their shortcomings before they leave this world. Ten years ago I experienced a spiritual death by allowing the hurt and pain inside of me to erupt like a volcano.

Before this incident, I was told by people who knew a portion of my story, “You will go through pain once you allow it to surface.” Of course, I ignored the advice wondering how this would affect me. To follow Recovery I learned humility, self-compassion, truth, and to be imperfect. A decade ago I survived by achieving, pride, and ego, and acting my way through life.

This last decade of my life I see myself as a little child. A child has no power, little anger, and jealousy. In my heart, I am opening myself to being more generous, kinder, forgiving, and welcoming toward myself and the people I interact with.

Here are some questions to contemplate for ourselves:

  1. What kind of truth do we confront?
  2. How do we follow Christ (Higher Power)?
  3. How do we listen to others in our Recovery community?
  4. Who are we? This is the most important question.
