December 4, 2024 What’s In A Name!

The first step of Recovery is, “We dedicate ourselves to a lifestyle of Recovery; our lives have purpose and meaning”. This reminds me of the names we go by. A name gives us meaning and an identity. Several years ago I asked my parents how they decided on naming me Lawrence (Larry)”? Mom had a close friend with twin brothers, Larry and Gary. Dad and Mom agreed they would pick one of these names if I were a boy.

I am glad they chose Lawrence since in the 60s we had the Vietnam War and Woodstock. I could have been named Bob (Dylan) or Elvis (Presley). Lawrence is my given name. A name is important when one is chosen for inspirational purposes. Hopefully, we as parents name or have named our children for a particular reason too.

The first step is more than a list of names, a single purpose, and meaning in our lives. It is a reminder of a few things about us. We are unique and have a history, temperament, and age experience. We open our hearts to healing and connect with people to grow mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Let’s live our name, our history, and our gifts. We can make a difference in honoring our name and finding our purpose and meaning in this life of healing and Recovery. We can serve the present generation in search of healing by modeling the 12-steps to them in all of our affairs.
