I hope that wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you.
Recovery offers us signs of healing, along with a promise of hope. When we touch something Real within ourselves, we begin to understand that the Real is rooted in love. Heaven, union, and love begin to grow within us. They become more than beliefs or connections with other people. They bring us a deeper sense of peace and freedom.
Our commitment to Recovery leads us toward the Real. At first, we may discover that we have misunderstood who we truly are. Recovery helps us become who we have always been, even when we have not known our True Self.
Because of our life experiences, including mental health struggles, substance misuse, and trauma, some of us hide parts of ourselves to protect ourselves and those we love. Our Recovery journey helps us discover this truth. As we grow, we begin to understand and accept who we really are.
Recovery teaches and guides us on this journey toward our True Self. This is a gift of grace, not a contest to prove our worth or an achievement we must earn. The tools of Recovery help us leave the wrong track and find the right one. They give us the strength and courage to begin the work of healing.
My identity was deeply wounded by my childhood experiences. From an early age, physical abuse, my mother’s mental illness, and my father’s drinking affected how I saw myself. Like weeds in a garden, painful experiences grew within me and began to choke out my True Self. This continued for three decades of my life. During that time, I hid my Real Self behind achievement, perfectionism, and a happy face.
Today, I am riding the Recovery train toward my True Self. As I watch the countryside pass by, I find hope. Little by little, I am learning to let go of my False Self and welcome the person God created me to be.
Perhaps the truth is not that we do not know who we are. Perhaps, deep within, we have always known. Recovery helps us uncover that truth, welcome it with love, and finally learn to live from it.
Remember, Recovery is happening right now, in this moment.
