I hope that wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you.
Just as an oar moves a boat forward, our Recovery work helps us move forward in healing. Recovery is a tool for doing our inner work. It helps us learn the difference between the wheat and the weeds, between what matters and what does not. This is part of the journey into the second half of Recovery, when we begin to sort through our lives and listen for deeper guidance.
Our days of working so hard on the outside are beginning to give way to a deeper kind of Recovery. We can rest in this new freedom and feel more grounded in who we are. We can let go of shame, needless guilt, sadness we place upon ourselves, and anxiety. We can learn to enjoy simply being human.
We are born with an inner longing that draws us toward our true Recovery Self. The journey is like a yo-yo, moving back and forth rather than in a straight line. This is a natural part of healing.
We carry an inner restlessness, a call that invites us to take the risks and discover the promises of the second half of Recovery. It is as though a Recovery-sized hole waits within us, ready to be filled. Recovery awakens a sense of incompleteness that only grace and spiritual love can truly nourish.
We do not need to fill our hearts and minds with addictive habits, constant activity, or empty distractions. Recovery can be found in the depths of our lives, even in places we might not expect. Sometimes, we discover it most deeply through our failures and shortcomings.
During the first part of my Recovery, I experienced a holy longing within me. Because I was still learning what Recovery meant, I tried to fill that emptiness with things that did not bring lasting peace. These included food, excessive exercise, achievement, the pursuit of perfection, alcohol, and avoiding emotional closeness with others.
In the second phase of Recovery, I moved beyond a beginning belief toward a deeper, inner knowing. I am learning to love more deeply, walk alongside others in their Recovery, and stand in genuine awe of the healing, beauty, and transformation that Recovery makes possible. These experiences are changing my life.
Now, I gently invite you to look within yourself to discover the strength to find hope, healing, and health.
Remember, Recovery is happening right now, in this moment.
