October 7, 2026: “The Sacred Tension of Recovery!”

I hope that wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you.

The truth of Recovery is the worldview that first hooked me. It continues to shape me, awaken me, and fill me with hope. At times, the journey has also made me question and even challenge what Recovery is teaching me. In many ways, I believe that is exactly how it should be.

Recovery asks me to look within. Through the 12 Steps, sources of hope, relationships, and the wisdom I have gained along the way, I am learning to search for what is true. I am learning that healing does not always come from changing what is outside of me. Sometimes, it begins by opening what is already waiting within my heart and soul.

I am discovering how to unlock spiritual truths from the inside rather than throwing rocks at them from the outside. When I live from the outside in, I can become trapped in fear, judgment, and powerlessness. But when I turn inward with honesty and compassion, something deeper begins to awaken.

Eventually, I found myself held in Recovery’s sacred tension. I believe this tension is both a test and a gift. It draws me into a deeper relationship with myself, with others, and with God. I think many of my peers have experienced this same tension.

Perhaps this is why it is so hard to become a “former” person in Recovery. Once we truly experience its healing power, Recovery becomes more than something we do. It becomes a way of seeing, living, and being in the world.

I continue to find that Big-Picture Recovery is just that—big enough to hold almost everything. It makes room for my head, heart, body, soul, and history. It makes room for both my darkness and my light. Once we begin to see Recovery this way, there is no real going backward. We may stumble, question, or lose our way, but the path remains before us.

Everyday Recovery is still a deep opportunity for transformation. It teaches me to stay present in the tension between darkness and light. It teaches me mindfulness, the importance of loving relationships, emotional regulation, and new ways of thinking. These practices may not change everything, but they can change enough to help me find peace and a different way forward.

For me, Recovery is a “one true miracle.” It is a place where human freedom and spiritual union meet. It is where I learn that healing is not about becoming perfect. It is about becoming more fully alive.

And perhaps that is the gift of Recovery: not that it takes away the struggle, but that it teaches me how to find God, hope, and healing in the middle of it.

Remember, Recovery is happening right now, in this moment.
