I hope that wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you.
I believe in and practice the Roman Catholic faith. In our faith, we have traditions that bring healing and comfort to those living with physical limitations, emotional pain, illness, and the many aches and struggles of life.
Some of us know Lourdes, a small town in southwestern France nestled in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains.
Lourdes is a major Catholic pilgrimage site and a symbol of faith, healing, hope, and comfort. More than 70 cases of miraculous healing have been officially recognized by the Church. Physicians have carefully reviewed these cases and found no medical explanation for the person’s recovery.
Recovery also brings healing to many of us who live with mental and emotional challenges. Yet, for most of us, healing does not mean that all our symptoms disappear. Some experience great relief from their suffering. Others continue to struggle. Why is that?
Matthew is a man who has struggled with anxiety and depression for most of his life. He relies on Recovery for support. Recovery loves Matthew very much.
One day, Matthew asked Recovery, “Why doesn’t healing help me the way it seems to help others in Recovery?”
Recovery answered, “I need you to be a witness and an example for others. Stay committed to your faith and your hope. Continue to work the 12 Steps, even when you are struggling. I may not be able to give you a miracle that takes away your symptoms, but I can help you become a champion who lives with courage despite your limitations.”
Millions of people have traveled to Lourdes seeking healing. Most have not experienced a physical miracle. Yet many have found their faith, hope, and love for Jesus Christ deepened.
Perhaps that is a miracle, too.
What a beautiful witness to faith, hope, love, and Recovery.
Remember, Recovery is happening right now, in this moment.
