September 23, 2026: “The Genius of Recovery!”

I hope that wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you.

The genius of Recovery is that it does not deny the dark side of life. Instead, it embraces forgiveness and failure and holds out a promise of wholeness. This is much of the purpose of the 12 Steps.

I believe Recovery has a way of finding something greater within our constant turmoil, especially when our moods and emotions are unsettled. This may be at the heart of its message and why true Recovery continues to heal and renew all that it touches.

When our inner and outer selves become more united, we can care more deeply for one another. Buddhists call this the Great Compassion. In this place of compassion, there is healing for life’s struggles and contradictions. Recovery keeps calling us back to a unified spirit, where we are meant to live all along.

In the spiritual economy of grace, our mistakes and failures can become the foundation for a saving experience. Yet sometimes people in Recovery become anxious about creating an ideal order in their lives. That ideal may not always be realistic or true. When we become too focused on getting everything right, we can cut ourselves off from happiness, wonder, and contentment.

Recovery is meant to be inclusive. It offers compassion and makes room for our differences. This includes people with disabilities, people who struggle with mental health, people who are irritable or difficult, people from different customs and traditions, and gay people.

When I am with people in my Recovery network, I hear a theme over and over again:

“When I come to a group or interact with people in Recovery, there is a nonjudgmental space. Some of the ways we think may seem strange to others. But in Recovery, we discover that we are not alone. What may seem strange to the world can feel normal among people who understand.”

As we work the program and continue to heal, our hearts and souls are slowly and gradually set free. We begin to experience a great turnaround in our lives.

Amazingly, we can learn to notice, accept, and pay attention to what is right in front of us. These things can become the very places where healing begins.

Eventually, we discover that the same passion that once led us away from Recovery can also lead us back to the 12 Steps—and back to our true selves.

Remember, Recovery is happening right now, in this moment.
