September 22, 2026: “When We Fall, We Can Rise!”

I hope that wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you.

Did you know that the Greek word for tragedy means “goat story”? The Odyssey is a primal goat story. Poor Odysseus keeps moving forward and backward, up and down—mostly down—as he makes his way home to Ithaca.

What does Odysseus’s story have to do with our Recovery? Each experience we have in Recovery can lead us to new knowledge and help us move “forward.” Yet this knowledge is often humbling. Sometimes we take a step backward in healing because we refuse to be humbled by what should have humbled us.

Have you ever noticed how difficult it can be for a leader to admit that a decision, war, or policy was wrong? Pride and self-deception can also become core issues in Recovery. On the other hand, Recovery can become the very place where we are transformed into a new way of life—a life we are called to rise toward.

Recovery teaches us that life can be tragic, but it also reminds us that we can survive and grow through these experiences. This is the great rescue! It depends on whether we can learn to see what feels like “down” as a path toward “up.” Psychiatrist Carl Jung expressed this idea when he said, “Where you stumble and fall, there you find pure gold.”

During my thirty-year Recovery journey, I have fallen hard five different times. What have I learned from each fall?

The first lesson is to increase my knowledge about mental health, understand what I can do to care for my emotional and spiritual health, and take action to protect my well-being.

The second lesson is the importance of connecting with people and deepening my relationships with them.

The third lesson is allowing God to have a strong presence in my life through prayer, the rosary, and belonging to a Catholic community.

We will all experience falls in our lives. Then, in time, we Recover from those falls. Both the falling and the recovering can become gifts of healing.

Remember, Recovery is happening right now, in this moment.
