September 18, 2026: “Recovery Is Not a Straight Line!”

I hope that wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you.

A Spanish philosopher, Miguel de Unamuno, said, “Life is not, nor ever has been, a straight line forward.” He believed life is shaped more by exceptions and disorder than by perfect order.

Life offers us loss and renewal, chaos and healing, all at the same time. It can feel like a collision of opposites.

Recovery connects faith with trust in a deep life force that touches our hearts and souls. It also includes reason, which helps us solve problems and make things work.

Just because something does not make sense to us does not mean it is untrue or unhealthy. Recovery also reminds us that just because something pleases people does not make it true.

Recovery is filled with joy. We discover this truth as we learn to trust the journey. If we want to find joy, we must accept that not everything will make sense. We will not always make everyone in our lives happy, either.

Embracing Recovery means experiencing the wide range of human life. We experience diversity, dark places, life events, death and rebirth, loss and renewal. We continue to push beyond our boundaries, and this helps us grow wiser.

Embracing this way of seeing life deepens our trust that Recovery works when we are willing to persevere.

I am learning to embrace all the thoughts and feelings I experience throughout my day. I do not run from or ignore the suffering or joy in my life. I acknowledge what is present and show myself compassion rather than going to battle with unwanted thoughts, feelings, and circumstances.

Before Recovery, I felt little joy, excitement, or happiness. Today, I allow myself to experience pleasure when it comes.

One of the greatest lessons I have learned is to be curious about my thoughts and feelings rather than judging or shaming myself. I am learning to meet myself with kindness, even when life feels difficult.

People in Recovery, along with family and friends, often have much to teach us. Those who live within what we call normal, proper, and good can also help us see the shadow and mystery in life.

These relationships invite us to look at our thoughts and feelings in new ways. They help us grow, remain humble, and keep searching.

Recovery teaches us not to rush toward an outcome simply to calm our anxiety. Instead, we can slow down, trust the journey, and allow God to guide us through the mystery of life.

There is no need to understand everything today. We can embrace what is before us with faith, compassion, and an open heart.

Remember, Recovery is happening right now, in this moment.
