I hope that wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you.
Our Loyal Recovery reveals itself to us when we desire it, are ready to embrace it, and are open to healing from past hurt and suffering. It is another way of growing and learning to live.
The darkness we experience in Recovery does not mean doom and gloom. Perhaps it is not an alternative we must fear, but a necessary path toward healing.
Many of us begin Recovery by descending into darkness. We may feel as though we are in hell before we rise into well-being.
Richard Rohr, in his book Falling Upward, says, “Every initiation rite I studied worldwide was always about dying before you die.”
When we release our Loyal Recovery, it may feel like a loss of faith or a loss of self. Rohr goes on to say, “But it is only the death of the false self, and is often the birth of the soul.”
Instead of being driven by our ego, we begin to be guided by our hearts and souls. This is the wisdom and pathway we need to enter the second phase of Recovery.
We want to expand our support community. This helps us connect with soul friends and, at times, spiritual guides.
Saint John of the Cross taught that God works in the soul in secret and in darkness. If we fully understood what was happening, and what transformation and grace would eventually ask of us, we might try to take charge or stop the whole process of Recovery.
How does what I have written apply to my Recovery?
None of us willingly chooses to face our struggles, even when it is our false self that is suffering. I continue to ask God to undo my illusions about healing and to help me let go of the need to be in total control.
That is why the best word for Recovery is faith.
I take steps each day that I do not understand, trusting in the quiet work of time and grace. I have moved beyond much of my trauma. When I look back, I am often unsure how it happened.
When the light of my Recovery begins to fade, I ask myself if I have stopped growing. Recovery does not always provide clear answers or solutions right away. Sometimes, we must wait.
Eventually, grace is given to us. It often comes unexpectedly, like a beautiful gift of healing.
How awesome is this!
God is quietly working within us, even when we cannot see it. We do not have to understand every step. We only need to keep walking in faith, trusting that love and grace are leading us toward the Peaceful Life.
Remember, Recovery is happening right now, in this moment.
