July 13, 2026 “Rebuilding Our Hearts with Virtue!”

I hope wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you right where you are.

Eight hundred years ago, a young Italian man searching for meaning entered a small, run-down church. There, he heard the voice of God say, “Rebuild my Church.”

If we listen with open hearts, we may hear a similar invitation: “Rebuild your mind, your heart, your soul—and recover.”

That young man was Francis of Assisi. At first, he believed God wanted him to repair old church buildings, so he rebuilt several of them. But the message was much deeper. God was calling Francis to help renew people’s hearts and lives.

Recovery is not calling us to remodel our homes or repair the buildings where we worship. The rebuilding we need today is spiritual. It begins within us.

Our lives grow stronger as we develop virtue. Recovery invites us to become people of courage, honesty, patience, humility, kindness, and hope. Our relationship with Recovery gives us the strength, grace, and wisdom to grow in these virtues.

What is virtue, and what does it have to do with Recovery?

Virtue is a lasting habit of choosing what is right and good.

One of the greatest mistakes we can make is believing that Recovery is only about stopping unhealthy behaviors. That is only the beginning. If we are not open to Recovery’s purpose for our lives, old habits and new forms of selfishness can quietly take their place.

No one is born virtuous. Good habits do not simply appear. Virtue grows through daily practice.

We learn to ride a bicycle by riding a bicycle. We learn to stop misusing substances by attending support groups, listening to others, and practicing healthier choices. We learn to set healthy boundaries by setting them, one step at a time.

Each small act of faithfulness shapes who we become.

Virtue leads to better choices, healthier relationships, deeper peace, and a stronger Recovery. When we practice virtue, we move away from the restlessness and chaos that can fill our hearts. Instead, we begin to live with greater order, listen more closely to our inner voice, and experience lasting clarity.

Recovery is not just about leaving an old life behind. It is about becoming the person we were created to be.

That is the beautiful work of rebuilding.

Remember, Recovery is happening right now, in this moment.
