I hope wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you right where you are.
When I was twenty-one years old, I was blessed with a wonderful mentor. I often wonder what my life would have been like without him. I do not believe it would have been nearly as meaningful or fruitful.
He encouraged me to read good books. He taught me how to manage my finances wisely. He showed me how to care deeply for others. He listened patiently as I shared my thoughts. He modeled what it means to be a loving husband and a caring father. Most of all, he encouraged me to honor the sacred truths in my heart.
One gift from our friendship has shaped my life more than any other. One day, he shared these simple words with me:
“Some moments, I am honest with myself. Some moments I am not. My choices can guide a moment in either direction.”
That truth cut through the confusion in my life. It gave me clarity when I needed it most.
When I look back, I can see that every good thing in my life has grown from living that truth. Much of the pain I have experienced at the hands of others or caused myself by poor choices came when I ignored the wisdom my mentor shared with me.
Today, I understand that honesty is the doorway to Recovery. When I am honest with myself, I can connect more deeply with my Recovery, with others, and with my own healing. Each honest moment becomes a moment of grace.
I hope to spend the rest of my life helping others discover that same honesty and clarity in their own Recovery.
Now it is your turn.
This is your moment.
No matter what your life has looked like up to this point, and no matter what choices you have made in the past, what matters most is the choices you make today.
Recovery begins to make sense when we realize this: in some moments we honestly seek healing, and in others we deny our need for it. Our choices lead us in one direction or the other.
Choose honesty today.
Choose Recovery today.
This is the greatest way I know to honor the mentor who shared that life-changing wisdom with me so many years ago.
Remember, Recovery is happening right now, in this very moment.
