As people in Recovery, we believe that by following the 12 Steps—their values and actions—we can find true life and healing. Recovery invites us into a fuller and more peaceful way of living.
But living the values of Recovery is not always easy. We are imperfect people. We make mistakes. Sometimes our feelings and instincts lead us in the wrong direction.
That is why we need help along the way.
We need examples to follow.
We need encouragement and care.
We need support, correction, reminders, and gentle challenges from others in the Recovery community. We are strengthened through support groups, spiritual leaders, prayer, and the wisdom of the 12 Steps.
We cannot do Recovery alone.
And we do not have to do it alone.
I remember walking into places where I did not know anyone. It may have been a party, a wedding, a funeral, or even a support group. In those moments, I found myself searching for a familiar face or listening for a familiar voice.
Recovery becomes that familiar presence. It walks with us through every part of life, even when we feel lonely, lost, or confused.
Over time, Recovery becomes a voice we recognize and trust.
We must allow Recovery to come close to our hearts, even close enough to bring tears. The “gift of tears” is precious. Tears speak the language of the soul. They soften our hearts, open us to mercy, and bring healing to the places within us that still hurt.
