I hope wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you right where you are.
How do we know we are fully taking part in our Recovery program?
We know when we welcome the gift of healing. Our souls feel connected to Recovery with clarity and joy. We feel the strength of faith, hope, and love. Peace rests in our humble hearts. This helps us move forward and become the best version of ourselves. It also leads us to live with gratitude.
How do we know when we are not taking part in our Recovery program?
Our souls may feel heavy and disconnected. We may feel darkness, restlessness, or sadness. Our mood may feel low. We may feel spiritually stuck and not want to pray or reflect. We may drift away from hope and love in our hearts.
In these moments, we can find comfort by choosing humility. We can lower ourselves gently and honestly. These times of darkness can help root us more deeply in humility. Recovery calls for our full attention. It invites us to seek clarity, joy, faith, hope, and love. These are the remedies for darkness.
Why is this kind of spiritual growth so important?
Humility is a blessing. It draws us closer to the grace of Recovery. A humble heart is rich soil where the 12 Steps can grow. It is a heart open and ready to receive the message of Recovery.
In Recovery, discernment means growing in self-awareness. It means understanding our actions and choosing how to respond to what we feel in our hearts. This way of thinking does not happen on its own. We must choose it each day. As Saint Ignatius taught, when we feel comfort, we should still choose humility. Over time, this way of thinking becomes a habit as we live out the 12 Steps.
In my early Recovery, my thoughts were dark and heavy. They shaped how I saw myself. I often thought, “I am bad,” “Do not get too proud,” and “I do not deserve love.”
When I began working the 12 Steps, my life started to change, one small step at a time. I began to understand where these thoughts came from. Today, those thoughts are much quieter. Instead, I turn up the voice of clarity, love, faith, and peace. I now remind myself, “I am worthy,” “I can give and receive love,” and “I can be humble and still honor my strengths.”
What is weighing you down?
How can you take one small step forward and become the best version of yourself?
