I hope wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you right where you are.
You may wonder how to use the encouragement from a Daily Devotional. I hope The Daily Devotional: 12 Steps to Unshakeable Recovery becomes a gentle conversation between us and Recovery itself.
We can use this Devotional in different ways:
Start with the first day and move forward one day at a time.
Flip through the pages until we find a topic that speaks to our needs right now.
Read it together in a support group and encourage one another.
Keep a journal of our thoughts and the actions we choose to take.
There is no one “right way” to use this Devotional. It is written to be personal and flexible for each of us.
A Daily Devotional helps awaken us. It brings self-awareness into our lives. But how do we practice this? Self-awareness is the starting point in Recovery.
One way to practice is through mindfulness meditation. I sit in a chair, close my eyes, and focus on my breath. For two minutes, I listen to what is happening around me and inside me.
In this quiet moment, I may notice a bus passing by, snow melting with the window slightly open, the ticking of a clock, or the taste of a piece of candy. I may feel my toes moving in my shoes or the steady beat of my heart.
This is self-awareness.
We can teach ourselves to be aware. This helps us connect with our Recovery and with the people we love. But there is one important thing to remember: self-awareness does not come from thinking harder. It comes from gently noticing what we feel through our senses—what we hear, see, smell, taste, and feel in our bodies.
Self-awareness means letting go of thoughts that drain us. It brings us back to what is real and sacred—this present moment.
When we live with awareness, we take part in our healing. We are no longer just watching life. We are living it, one moment at a time.
