March 18, 2026 “The Gift of Knowing Our Inner Life!”

I hope wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you right where you are.

Self-awareness is very important in Recovery. There are three kinds: psychological, moral, and spiritual. Each one helps us understand ourselves and guides how we live each day.

These are not things others can see on the outside. They happen within us. They shape our hearts and souls and help grow our inner beauty. Let’s begin with psychological self-awareness.

Psychology is the study of the mind. It looks at how we think, how we see the world, and how our brain works. In my Recovery, I have grown in mental awareness. One way I do this is by taking my medications as prescribed. These help balance the chemicals in my brain so I can function well.

Right now, I am lowering one of my medications because of side effects like constipation and high cholesterol. I also do a daily inventory. This helps me stay aware and protect the progress I have made over the past four years. Practicing self-awareness helps me stay steady.

Next is moral self-awareness. This is about knowing right from wrong. Being honest with ourselves takes courage and humility. It is not just about being honest with others. It is about being honest within our own hearts.

My wife and I once watched a show using our daughter’s account so we would not have to pay. My wife felt this was wrong. She believed it was like stealing. I listened and saw that she was right. Her words helped wake up my own self-awareness. We chose to get our own subscription. This is an example of taking moral action, even when it would have been easy not to.

Finally, there is spiritual self-awareness. In Recovery, we turn inward to connect with something greater than ourselves. We bring our hearts and souls into that space. Prayer, meditation, and quiet reflection help us grow in this way.

In my journey, my spiritual life has had ups and downs. Today, I see how important my faith is to my Recovery. I try to invite God into my life each day. In the morning, I pray the Our Father and the Hail Mary. When I talk with others, I listen closely and ask myself if their words may carry a message from God. I attend Mass on the weekend and spend time in adoration during the week. Without this inner change and action, my Recovery would feel empty.

For all these reasons, self-awareness matters deeply in Recovery. When we understand our inner world, we can better walk through the outer world with peace and purpose.

As Dag Hammarskjöld once said, “When the morning’s freshness has been replaced by the weariness of midday… it is then that you must not hesitate.”

Remember, Recovery is here right now, in this very moment.
