There is a beautiful sixteenth-century oil painting that continues to offer hope to those of us who carry regret and seek forgiveness from God—our Higher Power. Tears of Saint Peter, painted by El Greco, portrays Peter weeping after denying Jesus three times. His eyes are lifted toward heaven, tears streaming, and his hands folded in prayer. The painting captures the raw sorrow of his dishonesty and the deep ache of betrayal.
What does this moment mean for us in Recovery?
When we are dishonest or betray someone we love, Recovery invites us back into right relationship—with others, with ourselves, and with God. Step Nine reminds us: we can release shame, guilt, and past shortcomings, remembering that we were created to love and to be loved.
In Peter’s tears, we see more than grief—we see the promise of mercy. God’s love and healing are always waiting, even when our faith falters or our spirit feels broken.
