July 11, 2025 Doubting Recovery!

I have moments when I lose my faith in Recovery. I am hurt by Recovery allowing me to suffer. I stake my life on Recovery, investing all my hopes and dreams. I feel let down when my symptoms return.

But I do not give up on Recovery. After five separate mental health episodes, when my remission ended, I returned to practicing my Recovery plan: support groups, therapy, psychiatry, good nutrition, sleep, and connecting with people I trust.

I give myself wholeheartedly to Recovery, and sometimes I am hurt and confused by its apparent failure. You may feel this way too, but we continue to practice Recovery and reach out to peers as an act of faithfulness.

There is not one of us who hasn’t been hurt by expectations of Recovery and God (higher power-Recovery and God are one, not separate entities) that have failed. We have experienced doubts. The difference is what we do with that hurt, confusion, skepticism, and doubt.

We cannot suppress them, deny them, or keep thinking over them alone. We need to be able to express our feelings in prayer or by reaching out to other Recoverees, such as members of our support group. As long as we don’t give up the search, all is not lost or forgotten. Recovery and God will come to us.

Recovery doesn’t come vindictively or angrily. We are not expected to come back with bloody knees. No, Recovery and God come with open arms, waiting to share our burdens and give us the strength to heal.
