When I began to attend support groups, therapy, and taking medication I came out of the desert after wandering in the dark for years. I was prepared to connect with Recoverees and learn what healing was about. Peers were willing to teach me the process of Recovery. It was remarkable to hear what peers went through to become free from their conditions and they still have days when they are mentally and emotionally cloudy.
Yes, we all come to our support systems when we are faced with difficult situations, which is why we find support in our communities. Supports are not a hotel for saints, supports are a household for us to heal. We are called to grow as a person when entering our plan of care. This is a place of goodness and joy and community where we collectively partake in the mystery of Recovery.
I recently heard a story that may help pull this together for us. “Have you ever heard of the red car theory? Probably not since I am making it up. Yesterday, how many cars did you see? You have no idea because it was something you did not pay attention to. What if I said, well at the end of the day you will receive a check for $100 for every red car you saw? Then you would probably pay attention to how many red cars you saw that day”. Let’s use this analogy, how many peers did we see committed to Recovery? How many peers did we see that had goodness about them that was unmistakable? How many times did you receive support from a peer? How many times did we recognize kindness from our therapist or doctor?
We pay attention to those things that somehow might be a reward. The reward is kindness or growth, better than what it was for us. This week have some red car moments, see someone we did not know, and say, “Peace to you”. We have no idea how that might help someone on a difficult day. The red car moments are moments when we manufacture light pay attention to the beauty, joy, generosity, and forgiveness, and fall in love with Recovery. Go find some red car moments!
