November 12, 2024 Thunder or Love!

We are trying to figure out our role, which one of us is going to be closest to Recovery? It is the meekest of us, the gentlest, those who seek not to be great who will be great.

An innocent person was on their way to meet his destiny. While on the way this person and friends stopped at a small village. The villagers knew they were on their way to the city and knew they were Jewish. The people in the town were in conflict sometimes with the Jews so they did not want to spend the night there. Two of the Jews got upset. They asked the person, “Do you want us to call down thunder on these people”? They believed this could get their retribution on the villagers for the harm they caused Jews.

The person realizes they have not yet learned their lesson. The person responds, “No” The group is being called to a profound understanding of what radical and sacred love is. It is not retribution, it is not cursing others, but is always about love and how we treat each other.

This can be a stumbling block for us as we learn what it takes to Recover. We think how are we going to get somebody back and under our breath curse them. Who is the best person we ever met? It most likely is not a wealthy person or great athlete, or not necessarily what they achieved in their work. Recovery draws us in to be kind, gentle, love beyond measure (ourselves and other people), and seek the good of another.

What are the stumbling blocks not only for Recovery but also for all of us? It is the need to get back at people for the harm they cause us. Our need for power, our “Stuff” is better than someone else’s, and our community is better than someone else’s. These are things we are wedded to as opposed to being the best person by loving ourselves and others.

To be the best person for ourselves and others is not about things. It isn’t better to put someone else down. Recovery calls us to love the best way we can. We commit in our practice of Recovery to be the best we can be by loving absolutely everyone including ourselves.
