November 11, 2024 Sustained Attention!

Today our country zooms in on Veterans of the United States. I deeply appreciate your sacrifice to keep us safe through the ups and downs of our human existence.

Has someone told you, “Pay attention to what I am telling you”? The person says this with a sense of urgency. We are asked to pay attention, wake up, and listen to what they are saying. There are so many things the person will offer us that usually, we need to understand but don’t.

“Sustained Attention” is where we stay focused on what is happening in our lives. It’s not one of those things that suddenly gets us in the moment but often while focusing on something like the words of healing. We can appreciate at a depth that gets deeper and deeper and deeper. The significance of healing is paying attention to what Recovery is telling us. Reflecting on this I am hit with a ton of bricks.

Why are we so inattentive by allowing ourselves to get distracted by things? Recently I have been reading several non-fiction books about healing and Recovery. The authors attempt to get my attention by talking about the rhythm of life. It has ebbs and flows, ebbs and flows, and eventually my heart will no longer work. The authors mentioned our emptiness, shame, guilt, anger, and bitterness.

The authors did not do this to make me depressed but to help me stay focused on the singular most important thing in our lives, which is to understand our Recovery (God) and return to sustained attention. In Recovery, we need to increase our “Attention Span” in a distracting world. It is very easy to lose our focus and what we are about so when we hear, “Pay attention to what I am telling you” let it sink in so the Recovery Program can help us pay attention.

We can see the hands of Recovery in different incidents that happen and then reveal to us the deeper meaning and we hear with Recovery over and over “Stay Awake”. Pay attention, may we all pay attention to Recovery’s movement in our lives. Don’t bear Recovery alone find support and replace suffering with hope.
