I like how universal and global Recovery is. People in different parts of the United States, Canada, and Europe have attained a copy of my book https://Superhumanbeing.net/ During book signing events I am allowed to meet with a diversity of fellow Recoverees. We all share a common bond in Recovery.
We encourage other people to follow the path of Recovery. Up until that point people surround themselves with activities such as only doing medication management, working long hours, spending money, alcohol and drug use, and omitting a Higher Power from their lives.
Matthew was a merchant who sat comfortably in his store while people with a mental health condition and addictions tried to get through life and make a living. John was a Recoveree who knew Matthew suffered from depression and anxiety. John invited him to join people with lived experience who were both rich and poor.
Matthew would be joining some of the various people who his store prices may have hurt. John expanded his circle of trust by bringing people together on opposing sides of wealth. We can imagine a Peer Recovery Support group between those paying a high cost for things and Matthew doing the pricing between the hard-working blue-collar labor and comfortable people with a means to pay high prices for goods.
They had to put aside differences and see each other as beloved daughters and sons of Recovery. John continued to widen the circle by including athletes, the poor, the wealthy, diverse ethnic groups, and other countries.
We are part of a global healing community of millions. This is why we have a 12-step program, these words speak to who we want to become. It all begins with a simple invitation from people like John. How wide is our circle of trust to invite others into the Recovery process?
Scholars note that we have created close-knit communities for survival from the dawn of humanity. Every time we expand circles our survival chances increase. By contrast when we divide or create smaller circles our rates of survival decrease. Healing calls us to live abundant lives by showing us we must expand and widen our Recovery communities.
Matthew had a change of heart and was willing to heal with his working-class brothers and sisters. Who are the Matthews in your life? We may pass by daily because we don’t want to get involved and bring people into our inner circle.
The 12-steps invite us to expand our circle of support and experience unity with other Recoveers we encounter.
