I anticipate many of you engaged in Halloween. Maybe you handed out candy, escorted your children throughout the neighborhood to ensure their safety, or went to an adult costume party. I watched a sports program featuring pro basketball players who came to the arena in costume. The children who came to our door appreciated the piece of candy my wife handed out. The children would say, “Trick or Treat” and once the candy was safely nestled into their bag they said, “Thank You”.
Giving thanks is an important part of the spiritual life of Recovery. Recognizing the great works of healing means we are active and present in our world and our lives is the heart of a Recoveree. When we open ourselves to the spiritual aspect of our lives we give way to faith, hope, and love, and we grow in the greatest of these which is love. Love of self, Love of the Higher Power (God), and love of neighbor.
Every event and need can become an offering and thanksgiving to a deeper spiritual presence. Amid our daily routine even the business of our day we can turn the events (Halloween), joys, and challenges of our days into an offering of thanksgiving.
Take a moment to pause and offer it up to our Higher Power whatever is weighing us down or bothering us today. In this way, a spiritual presence becomes part of that need, event, or relationship. Even if all we do is thank our Higher Power or someone we love for their grace to us. This allows love and peace to enter our hearts.
Reflecting on these words perhaps is a good way to end and begin our day. We thank our Higher Power, family, friend, or neighbor for what is before us and thank them for their presence that guides and strengthens us along our daily pathway.
