October 22, 2024 Scars Are More Than Wounds!

When I was a youth I reached down on the floor to pick up several pieces of glass and cut the inside of my left hand, it began to bleed heavily requiring stitches. I have a scar from that which never went away. The scar annoys me when I make a fist. Every time I see the scar I flash back recalling the exact location and see the bandage covering the wound.

Scars are memories, scars are more than just a wound but symbols of a few different things. It marks a violation of what was once perfectly fine, a violation that will never be the same again. In tuning into our lives things are going fine and then there is a violation of our mental and emotional health. There is assurance our Higher Power (God) is there. God can restore us.

Mental and emotional scars symbolize healing moving from rawness to something more stable. This type of scar shows we got through something. Amazing grace touches our lives. A scar is about a rising from the ashes like a Phoenix free to sore in creation.

How do we sometimes get to know people? By the scares and wounds, they share with us. The mix of violation and violence has not just been healed but brought to the next level. They become a sacred sign, a holy wound, and a scar becomes a literal ray of hope to heaven.

Our lives have wounds, our nation has wounds, and sadly so does our world. Wounds will continue to scar us very personally. Saint Peter Cleaver said, “One cannot love without suffering or suffer without loving”. Look for a scar today that through faith maybe we will see a reminder of healing and we are more than a scar. We live in a world where hope and promise will shine bright, and where all will be one is a reality.
