I am thinking about what to say to you today. Committing to a life of Recovery is a special calling. We can demonstrate our efforts to heal in a wide variety of ways. This may include connections with people in Recovery, therapists, doctors, exercise, mindfulness, and others we find helpful. Did you know once we commit to Recovery we become stewards (We receive gifts gratefully, cultivate them responsibly, and share them lovingly in justice with others) to the mysteries of Recovery (12-steps are one example)?
This may be a difficult concept to grasp but stay with me here. During Recovery, which includes those who support people in Recovery, have we shared what we are learning to heal? If we answer, “Yes” this is an example of being a steward of the mysteries of Recovery. There are people in the United States and other English-speaking countries around the world devoid of Recovery.
I think all of us through our desire to heal have entered the mysteries of Recovery. When I interact with people in Recovery I am amazed at how freely they share their gifts and what works for them. Each day we have opportunities to deepen the mysteries of Recovery by embracing the role of being a steward of healing. We first and foremost need to understand ourselves, the mystery that is in us vie our commitment to Recover. But how do we communicate this to other people?
The challenge for us is, “Am I trustworthy of being a steward”? We need to deepen our hearts to figure out if we are not trustworthy in the mystery. What do we need to uproot in us to be found trustworthy? Be great stewards of the mystery of Recovery. Once we do this the rest of our lives will be full of resiliency giving us the gifts to handle what life has in store for us.
