Why do we celebrate the Higher Power (God for me), Kings, and Queens in our present and past traditions? First, because of the virtue (behavior showing high moral standards) of being the best version of ourselves. Also, it shows those who rule and are in authority how they can use their authority for the common good, building up people to become the best version of themselves.
Why is this important for us to recognize in our Recovery? For some of us, we experienced abuse from authority figures we placed our trust in. This may have been a parent, teacher, coach, boss, etc. However, authority is meant to serve the common good and help us become the best version of ourselves. Would it not be healing today if those of us in authority could learn to implement what it takes to raise compassionate, kind, caring, and loving people?
We share in the common good by bringing curiosity to our Recovery with an ability to respond rather than react by hurting people. Here are a few messages we can use to show kindness to others and ourselves:
- May I be happy and healthy
- May I be free from inner and outer harm
- May I live a life of peace and ease
