The busyness of our lives, the habit of talking rather than listening, and living life in constant motion leave little time to develop our inner world. We can learn from monks what it takes to cultivate healing, mental, and emotional growth.
Monks are not fans of talking and rarely do their superiors permit them to speak. Monks are zealous of silence at all times so that they can hear God’s voice. How do we hear the path toward healing? The key is listening with our hearts in silence. When we set our souls in silence we find peace. We dial into the truth in our hearts. In the heart, the secrets teach us wisdom.
Foster an atmosphere of contemplative silence to listen for the voice of Recovery to help change our lives. Meditation is the act of listening and then expressed by our actions. A monk’s life is a balance of contemplation and action. This is in contrast with us being egocentric. The most important thing is a search for compassion, kindness, mercy, and love for ourselves.
A monk’s love is primarily in service to people. Cleaning out our hearts and souls from a dark existence makes room for healing and love. We can let go of past hurts and allow Recovery to bring us peace and joy. We can be drawn into a place where nothing stands in the way of becoming the person our Higher Power intended us to be. We will find ourselves in a situation where we want nothing but a clear heart and soul.
We don’t need to live in a monastery to find silence and listen for the messages in our hearts and souls. We can find space in our homes, or church, by joining a mindfulness group, or a walk in the woods. What are we waiting for? Our hearts have the lyrics to help us heal and guide us toward action.
