It isn’t easy to be the banana or second act. Ed McMahon was second to Johnny Carson on a talk show. Ed’s major job was pointing the audience to the host, Johnny Carson. There is a certain grace to that. This is more like our role pointing beyond ourselves to a Recovery program. We also invite other people to do the same.
This is where grace touches our lives. Celebrate the second banana (ourselves) calling us to action by following a Recovery program. Humility challenges us to let go of our pride and ego to be fed by the programs, relationships with people, and reading books.
We can let go to realize it is not all about us, our lifestyle, and point to our program. Also, we make the crooked ways straight by working through events in life and straightening our broken hearts. Our healing prepares us for whatever the world tosses our way. We live our lives like Ed McMahon he aspired to make sure Johnny was great as a star.
We are not a banana but our journey in life is a light illuminating our hope, joy, kindness, and peace to assist others and ourselves in Recover.
The idiom “second banana” is used to describe someone who plays a supporting role or is not as important as another person.
