Peace of mind is hard to achieve; paying bills, managing feelings, healing from trauma(s), challenges at work, and doing ministry very well. Our humanity seeks justice, kindness, and peace. I am asked by friends and family whether I watch the news. My response is, “No.” because the reports are often violent. I also do not tune into talk show hosts focusing on current events because the host and guests shame people. (Sidebar, I tune into ESPN for news and listen to conversations by former athletes and hosts).
According to Brene Brown brenebrown.com, “Shame is the intensely painful feeling or experience of believing that we are flawed and therefore unworthy of love, belonging, and connection. Shame drives two tapes: 1. We are never good enough and Who do we think we are?”
The world has been entrusted to us. What do we do with this blessing? Regardless of our state of mind and bodies, we can live in justice and peace. We take action when we supplement faith with virtue, virtue with knowledge, knowledge with self-control, self-control with endurance, endurance with devotion, devotion with mutual affection, and mutual affection with love. Reflecting allows us to focus on identifying the graces in our lives leading to a life of virtue, self-control, and endurance. This way of loving is needed today whether we are in a traffic jam, walking down the street, looking over our shoulder in a city, suffering from a mental health challenge, addiction, trauma, or fleeing violence and death.
What are we willing to heal from to live in this world? I believe without our Higher Power (God) violence irrupts and peace of mind becomes illusive. When we remain faithful to virtue and endurance we may be an example of our Higher Power. Turn our whole being toward trusting and loving our Higher Power. Then we will experience justice, kindness, and peace.
