When we make a move to slowly and incrementally move away from the prison of mental health challenges, addiction, and trauma our worldview begins to change. Ask ourselves, “Where are we going?”
Not leaving our prison guarantees a life full of shame, guilt, anxiety, sadness, and relationships with like-minded people. On the other hand, when we move out of prison, our worldview will turn to peace, self-compassion, kindness, and self-care, and find a supportive person or group to lift us.
I committed ten years ago to become completely connected to a Recovery program. Before this time I went to support groups, saw a therapist, and psychiatrist. It was more of an intellectual exercise without an emotional connection to past trauma. Slowly and incrementally I allowed myself to feel deep emotional pain. I did this work with a therapist who specialized in eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/treatments/22641-emdr-therapy
I stuck to being co-joined with Recovery. Presently, I experience joy amidst my healing. Before ten years ago, I rarely felt joy. When I find the prison attempting to pull me back into the cell of darkness I am confident I can reach out for support from family, friends, support group members, and treatment team members.
Ask yourself, “Where am I going on the road to Recovery?”
If you support someone with a mental health condition, addiction, and/or trauma ask yourself, ” Where am I going on the road to supporting a person in Recovery/”
Peace
Larry
