We live in a country that allows us to seek out mental health and addiction resources. In other countries these resources are not readily available for people due to oppression or the topic is entirely shameful in their culture and people numb out suffering in silence.
We are taught not to be concerned with the external world. I recognize the truth of this thought but know this is difficult to do. My last employer had an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for those of us experiencing anxiety, depression, and a host of other challenges. I was having a difficult time with the way the boss was treating me. I decided to access EAP. The counselors were very helpful in pointing me in the right direction to relieve my symptoms.
Within the work environment, I spoke to co-workers and management about the challenges I was having with depression and anxiety. I hoped to let people know it is ok to ask for help. Unfortunately, management began treating me differently. They began to question and go over everything I did. Up to this point, I excelled in my job and was viewed as one of the top leaders in my field.
I have since retired from this job. I enjoy the freedom I have to practice Recovery with people I love and trust. By becoming an author, creating this blog, and facilitating a support group I continue to heal and help support other people in Recovery or support people who support others in Recovery.
We can live with a zeal to be open to the world about our healing. We can make valuable contributions to our families, friends, community, and employment in ways not previously thought possible. When we come together people know we are in Recovery by our love for each other and for those that support our Recovery efforts. Now this is something to get fired up about!!!
Peace
Larry
