If you are not engaged in a 12-step program or another similar format now is the time to develop a relationship with something greater than yourself to help you along the path of wellness.
I am learning the fine art of developing a relationship with the 12 steps, drawing me closer to a Higher Power (God). I want to share an example of what practicing the steps looks like.
Dad hurt his knee a few weeks ago. The injury limits his mobility and the pain is excruciating at times. I have been serving him by helping him with activities of daily living. I have escorted him to several doctor appointments, fetched groceries, and other small tasks when needed.
Dad’s television was not functioning well. He was obsessed with getting it to work. We were sitting in the living room and he wanted me to fix the problem. I am not tech-wise when electronics are not working. I got up from the couch to grab the remote from him. When I approached him I let out a sigh…..because I was tapped out from serving him. When I returned home I did a little inventory because I felt guilty about how I handled the situation.
The next day when I went to check on him I told him I was sorry for my behavior toward him when he asked me to fix the television. He was kind and gentle about it granting me forgiveness.
Because I am working a 12-step program it heightens my self-awareness. When I behave the way I did toward Dad it hurts my relationship with God. God is present in Dad and he is present in me.
As I continue to build a relationship with the 12 steps and people in my life I increase my capacity to handle misery and suffering. I also experience greater peace, healing, joy, and communion.
Place yourself in my shoes, How would you handle what happened between Dad and me?
Think of a time when your behavior harmed a relationship (How would you handle it using the 12 steps or another program you are actively engaged with?
