For some of us, we have remained in survivor mode due to our depression, addiction, and trauma. Surviving anything can impact our health and well-being. Oddly enough we find comfort in living out our life as a survivor.
Dennis needed a new pair of shoes because his other pair had little to no support left in them. He drove to a local shoe store to try on several pairs. Finally, he found a pair he thought would provide the support and comfort he needed. When he returned home it was difficult for him to dispose of the old worn-out pair. He would wear the new pair for a couple of hours each day before changing back to his old pair. Despite the new ones offering the support and comfort he needed the old ones gave him the security he counted on.
I entered Recovery during my early 30s. I looked at the world as a land to survive in. During my Recovery I began to recognize things could be different. I began to imagine and dream about how my life could flow once I let go of being a survivor. I am learning to let go of my broken-down shoes and find the support and comfort I crave in a new pair. This is not easy for me to do. I continue sometimes to allow the survivor in me to surface. When this happens I gently transition to a new way of life and allow myself to experience discomfort while doing it. Sooner or later the new becomes comfortable.
Reflection:
“Embrace our Recovery joyfully. Let go of unhealthy persons or ideas tempting to influence our life choices. The world will take us of course, but working on our Recovery will bring us blessings we never thought possible”. L.J. Winter
