The end of summer is fast approaching. The forest is holding the color of green between the trees and plants. The sky is full of fluffy white clouds with a sprinkling of blue allowing the sun to appear off and on. Out of the shadows of the forest, a kangaroo appears and is hopping with gladness.
A Bear rumbles slowly along following a path on the forest floor. The Bear is sad, depressed, and just wants to sleep. Kangaroo is good friends with the bear and immediately notices something is not right with his buddy. The Kangaroo says, “My friend what is wrong”?
The Bear responds, “I feel sad and very lethargic”.
“Do you have any idea what may be going on with you”?
The Bear described his mother as suffering from depression and she recently died. He realized that he too may suffer from depression, anxiety, and trauma. “What I need right now is a person to listen to me as I try to make sense of this.
Kangaroo said, “You can share with me what is on your mind”.
The Bear proceeded to share parts of his life with the Kangaroo. Most of what he spoke about had never been told to anyone before. When he was done his mood appeared to lift.
Bear said, “Thank you for listening, being with me, and not trying to fix me or solve my problem. You have brought a bounce into my step”.
Kangaroo commented, “I learned from my friend the Owl to connect with compassion and concern for people to open up heart-to-heart communication, to empower people to experience passion and purpose in their lives, and revitalize the lives of people to increase energy, new life, creativity, hope, and interest in people”.
Our willingness to share what is on our mind is critical for Recovery. Our willingness to be present with a person who needs to talk can lift their mood in order to manage their daily routines. Sometimes it can be wise to connect a person to a support group.
