I have traveled to Woodbury Minnesota for a medical procedure once a week for the past eight weeks. When I arrive at the doctor’s office they weigh me and take my blood pressure and pulse. I am proud to say the results of my vitals reflect that I am in excellent cardio condition. I do have hormonal deficiencies that require medication to bring my scores to a healthy level. It is necessary to take the medication at regular intervals in order to remain in good health.
In order to determine my hormonal levels blood is drawn. There is scientific evidence that substantiates what is normal, high, or low. If there are abnormalities there are treatment protocols that a doctor uses backed by scientific evidence.
Mental health is not as clear as physical health can be. When I work with my psychiatrist I share my symptoms with him/her. There is no blood test that says my serotonin or dopamine is low. It is believed if I am deeply sad and extremely anxious that I may lack these two chemicals in my brain. For several years I have been taking a cocktail of medication that helps normalize my mood.
I have learned that physical health issues are much easier to identify and treat. Mental health conditions are difficult to diagnose and harder to treat. A mental health doctor listens to the patient and other people in their lives to make the best decision on the type of treatment that will aid the person. There are often adjustments that are necessary until there is a leveling of our moods.
Maybe someday the science of mental health will be more definitive on the best treatment protocol to help us normalize our moods. Keep hope alive!!
Peace
Larry
