Support from others who care about us can help us through on our commitment to maintaining our health and well-being, keeping our cloudy days to a minimum. Contrary to Western thought we are an interdependent being that needs others for support rather than the myth you need to be totally independent. A standard message is “Pick yourself up by the bootstraps”. Even boots need a heel and sole to bring us comfort and support.
Despite our efforts sometimes we will find our attitude and mood declining. This is called relapse in Recovery from a mental health or substance use condition or a breakdown of our physical body. Similar to a cancer patient we may experience a period of remission, only later find our symptoms return. Shame, guilt, or excuses when symptoms return is a signal that we need support from people willing to listen, keep us safe, and not reject us.
During a relapse of our symptoms repeat to yourself, “What is the next healthy action I will take to take care of myself ”? This attitude makes a difference between acting on our symptoms and urges or utilizing our Recovery plan.
Reflection:
“I cannot stand the words, ‘Get over it’. All of us are under pressure to put our problems in the past tense. Slow down, and don’t allow other (people) to hurry your healing. It is a process, one that may take years, occasionally, even a lifetime – and that’s OK..” Beau Toplin
