I hope that wherever you are, you know Recovery is with you.
When we pray, our first urge may be to ask for specific answers to specific problems. We may also ask God to help other people in the way we think they should be helped or healed. In these moments, we are asking God to do things the way we want them done.
Therefore, we may need to pump the brakes on our requests and look closely at our motives. When we make specific prayer requests, it can be helpful to add, “If it be Your will, Lord.”
Another helpful way to stay close to God is through meditation and my daily devotional book, 12 Steps to Unshakeable Recovery. These practices can help keep us centered on the path of Recovery we must follow as we learn to manage mental health and substance misuse.
Whatever happens, we may need to find that quiet place within us where we can rest and listen. To truly listen, we must become quiet. My experience has taught me that the quieter I become, the more I can feel God’s love. His peace touches my heart and soul and slowly washes away my fears and hurts.
We must pray and meditate, but we must also keep rowing toward shore. In other words, there is a time to pray, a time to listen, and a time to take action.
I have come to understand that dangers, perhaps even greater dangers, can arise when I leave my safe place of mental health and step into the ordinary world. This is where I may need to change. And change always brings uncertainty.
For several years, I made every day look the same. This gave me a level of security that I thought I needed. I held back from opening myself to new people and new experiences. My life became shallow. I became comfortable with feeling secure and safe, and I depended on the predictability of my routines.
My attitude was, “My mental health challenges are not comfortable, but at least I am safe.”
Today, my relationship with God gives me a greater sense of freedom. It is helping me manage my moods and live with greater trust.
When we listen, we learn. And to learn means we must keep listening.
What have you learned today by listening?
Take a few moments today to write down how you will begin to pray and meditate. Make time to become quiet and make conscious contact with God, your Higher Power. Then listen. You may be surprised by what you hear in the silence.
Remember, Recovery is happening right now, in this moment.
